In Honor of All the Queen's Horses: Top US Equestrian Colleges

Queen Elizabeth II was laid to rest today after over 70 years on the throne. It's no secret that she had a deep love of horses and it's been reported that she owned over 100 of them in her lifetime! Her first horse was a Shetland pony given to her when she was just 4 years old and she continued to regularly ride up until she was 95, only stopping because of doctor's orders due to her mobility issues. While she received private lessons in the UK growing up, there are several colleges and universities in the US with an equine science option. That's right; a degree in horses, and it's more than just riding.

The Education of The Late Queen Elizabeth II

Queen Elizabeth II died yesterday at Balmoral Castle surrounded by the Royal Family at the age of 96 after a record 70 years on the throne. She wasn’t meant to be Queen when she was born in 1926, but became next in line after her uncle, King Edward VIII, abdicated in 1936, making her father the King. While she undoubtedly lived a very privileged life within the confines of Buckingham Palace, the future Queen needed to be educated to prepare her for her role in the Monarchy.

Wesleyan College: First For Women's Education

Founded in 1836 as Georgia Female College, Wesleyan College was the first college in the world established to grant degrees to women. It was created after local citizens alongside members of the Methodist Episcopal Church saw growing concern of the current limitations of higher education access for women. Upon opening their doors officially in 1839, Wesleyan was considered progressive for their liberal arts education centered around sciences.

The History of HBCUs

Historically Black Colleges and Universities were established before 1964 for the sole purpose of academically serving African American students. Previous to their existence, and during segregation in the United States, Black students were largely prevented from receiving higher education due to racial discrimination, with the majority of colleges catering predominately to white students and disqualifying the majority of Black students from attending.

The Honorable Ruth Bader Ginsburg: An Academic Scholar

As an American jurist serving on The Supreme Court from 1993-2020, Ruth Bader Ginsburg spent much of her career as an advocate for women’s rights, gender equality, and civil rights and became a bit of a celebrity due to her short-stature, quiet demeanor, and strong dissents. Her educational career was also quite impressive and paved the way for her court accomplishments!
