NHL Opt-Out of Beijing Olympics Gives Way to NCAA Athletes to Compete
The 2022 Beijing Olympics is in its final week and we’ve had a blast watching all of the Olympians flawlessly compete in what appear to be impossible sporting events!
It’s widely known that many of the Olympians representing the United States are current and former NCAA athletes, but due to the NHL’s decision to opt-out of competing in Beijing citing COVID-19 reasons, many college hockey athletes were given the otherwise unlikely chance of a lifetime to take the ice. According to USA Hockey, “The 25-player Team USA roster includes 15 players currently on NCAA rosters, eight European professionals and two players competing in the AHL.”

As of this writing, Team USA was knocked out of the competition by Slovakia in the quarterfinal round after a shootout. Team USA ranked 5th overall.
