Need Help with Math? Find a Member of Pi Mu Epsilon!
We’re not sure about you, but we’re counting down the days to the end of 2020! We can hardly make heads or tails with what day, week, or month it is, and are trying to figure out how many days are left until the ball drops on New Year’s Eve. Do you know who would be able to help us out with this? Members of Pi Mu Epsilon -- The Mathematics Honor Society!
Established in 1914 at Syracuse University Pi Mu Epsilon is “...dedicated to the promotion of mathematics and recognition of students who successfully pursue mathematical understanding.”
Pi Mu Epsilon currently has 337 chapters in 48 states nationwide and hosts an annual conference in conjunction with the Mathematical Association of America -- a professional society that focuses on mathematics at the undergraduate level. PME members are encouraged to host a 15-minute presentation on their favorite mathematics topic of interest as a way to promote new thinking on somewhat known facts during the conference. The organization also publishes a semi-annual journal with research papers and a problem section.
In order to qualify for membership, students must have completed a minimum of two semesters of calculus and two additional courses in mathematics at the same level as calculus or above while maintaining a GPA of 3.0 in all mathematical sciences.
Pi Mu Epsilon members can be spotted at graduation by their gold, purple, and lilac honor cords.
