Kappa Omicron Nu: The National Honor Society for the Human Sciences
Human sciences studies human life through philosophy, biology, culture, and social aspects. If that seems broad to you, you’re right! Kappa Omicron Nu fully encompasses a wide range of fields, giving many students an opportunity to join.
According to Wikipedia, human sciences is “the study and interpretation of the experiences, activities, constructs, and artifacts associated with human beings. The study of the human sciences attempts to expand and enlighten the human being's knowledge of their existence, its interrelationship with other species and systems, and the development of artifacts to perpetuate the human expression and thought. It is the study of human phenomena. The study of the human experience is historical and current in nature. It requires the evaluation and interpretation of the historic human experience and the analysis of current human activity to gain an understanding of human phenomena and to project the outlines of human evolution. Human science is the objective, informed critique of human existence and how it relates to reality.”
After combining Kappa Omicron Phi and Omicron Nu, Kappa Omicron Nu was formed in 1990. It brought together the best pieces of two long standing organizations. According to its website, KON “gives voice to advocacy for scholarship; clarity to the quest for excellence in scholarship, research, and leadership; leadership to a sizable scholarly community for critical dialogue, collaboration, and networking; emphasis to examining the responsibility of scholars to the profession and society; commitment to enriching the intellectual environment through its local and national initiatives; and priority to innovative and enhanced services.”
