How to Balance Being a Full-time Student with a Part-time Job

Melissa W.

Balancing being a full-time student with a part-time job can be challenging, but it is possible with careful planning and time management. With roughly 40% of full-time college students working at least a part time job, it's no surprise this balancing act is a popular topic. After all, you do need some spending money even if you’re living in a dorm on campus and have a meal plan set at the dining commons. Here are some tips to help you succeed:

  1. Create a schedule and stick to it

One of the best ways to balance your time is to create a schedule and stick to it as much as possible. This includes scheduling time for classes, work, studying, and other commitments. It is also important to schedule time for yourself to relax and recharge.

  1. Prioritize your tasks

Not all tasks are created equal. Some tasks are more important and urgent than others. When you are creating your schedule, prioritize your tasks so that you are working on the most important things first. This will help you to avoid feeling overwhelmed and ensure that you are completing your most important assignments and deadlines without being left scrambling at the last minute.

  1. Be efficient with your time

When you are short on time, it is important to be as efficient as possible. This means avoiding distractions and focusing on the task at hand. It is also important to take breaks when you need them, but avoid getting sidetracked, which is easier said than done!

  1. Learn to say no

It is important to learn to say no to new commitments, especially if you are already feeling overwhelmed. It is better to focus on doing a few things well than to try to do too many things and end up doing them poorly.

  1. Ask for help when you need it

If you are struggling to balance your work and school commitments, don't be afraid to ask for help. Talk to your professors, your manager, and your friends and family. They may be able to offer you support and advice. You may try changing your shifts around to see what works best for your schedule and mental health.

Here are some additional tips that may be helpful:

  • Choose a job that is flexible. If possible, try to find a part-time job that is flexible with your school schedule. This may mean working evenings or weekends, or finding a job that allows you to work remotely.
  • Take advantage of campus resources. Many colleges and universities offer resources to help students who are working part-time. These resources may include tutoring, career counseling, and help with time management.
  • Don't be afraid to negotiate. If you have an off-campus part-time job, talk to your manager about your school schedule and see if there is anything that they can do to accommodate you.
  • Look for a job either on campus or near campus. This will help cut down commute time (you could maybe even walk to your job or take a campus shuttle). Oftentimes, these jobs offer managers who are sensitive to the needs of students since most of the staff consists of students!
  • Take care of yourself. It is important to take care of yourself physically and mentally when you are balancing work and school commitments. Make sure to eat healthy foods, get enough sleep, and exercise regularly. It is also important to schedule time for relaxation and stress relief.

Balancing being a full-time student with a part-time job can be challenging, but it is possible with careful planning and time management. By following the tips above, you can set yourself up for success!
